Backpack Program

Backpack Sites & Average Number of Bags provided for the 2012-13 school year:

The Backpack Program provides food to children that are found to be most in need by school personnel and who participate in the school meals program at their school. For many of these children they receive very little if anything at all to consume during the weekend time.

West Ohio Food Bank began to provide this program during the school year of 2006 throughout the 5 elementary schools located within the Lima City School district. Initially the program provided only 150 children with these backpacks of food. Since its' inception, with the partnership of many schools located within the 11 county service area, the program now provides approximately 2,800 bags each week to children who are in need.

Each bag contains 2 breakfast, 2 lunches, 2 dinners, 2 snacks, and 2 drinks. The food in each bag is enough for the child to have a 3 meals a day during Saturday and Sunday when they aren't in school and unable to participate in the meals program. Each item is kid-friendly and can be prepared by the child if necessary.

Currently the Backpack Program is provided in the following schools: Allen County- Lima City Schools, Elida, Perry, Bath, Spencerville, Delphos, and Allen East; Auglaize County- Cridersville, Wapakoneta Elementary & Wapakoneta Middle School; Hancock County- Arcadia, Bigelow Hill, Northview, Jacobs, Lincoln, Center for Autism & Dyslexia; Hardin County- Ridgemont & Kenton Elementary; Paulding County- Paulding Elementary School; Putnam County- Ottawa Elementary School; Seneca County- Tiffin Elementary.

West Ohio Food Bank is continuously looking for support for the Backpack Program. This could come in the form of monetary, product, or volunteering. Since the program has grown exponentially, the need for volunteers is even greater than before. The bags are packed and distributed to the children weekly.
