Why a Capital Campaign?
Hunger is the number one problem caused by the current economic situation. Demand for hunger relief services has increased by more than 40 percent in the last year.
The face of hunger in our communities is changing. Working families have been hard hit. Your neighbors and co-workers need help. With more people needing help, the hunger relief system must expand to meet that need. But, the acquisition, storage and distribution of food to more than 170 member charities throughout its 11 county service area is a complex operation, especially when it involves perishable fresh food that must be refrigerated or frozen. By purchasing its currently leased distribution center, the West Ohio Food Bank will be able to provide a stable food delivery system to more than 170 pantries, soup kitchens and shelters that depend on it to serve thousands of people every week.
The Capital Gains
Making a pledge to the West Ohio Food Bank is not just a charitable gift- it's an investment in your community.
The West Ohio Food Bank is the critical link in your community's hunger relief system. Now, more than ever before, thousands of people throughout Western Ohio are making difficult choices.
In some cases, families have to consider splitting up so their children can be fed properly. Single mothers are being forced to choose between paying their electric bill and buying food. The West Ohio Food Bank makes it possible for these families to make it through these difficult times.
By providing nutritionally balanced meals, complete with protein, grains and fresh fruits and vegetables, children can concentrate on their schoolwork, the elderly can gain strength and working parents can keep working with their heads held high.
Every dollar you invest will provide several dollars worth of food supplies and support services, making it possible for more than 170 pantries, soup kitchens and shelters to serve tens of thousands of people, whenever and wherever there is a need for hunger relief in Western Ohio.
The West Ohio Food Bank was fortunate to place the down payment for its 35,000 square foot distribution center in 2009. This building is critical for the safe handling and timely delivery of nutritious food for families in need of hunger relief. Currently, the food bank continues to raise funds to pay down the monthly mortgage payments. Raising this money and making 1380 E. Kibby St., Lima, OH the food bank's permanent home, has saved more than $120,000 per year in lease costs, allowing it to redirect those funds to increasing the amount of food purchased and improving the West Ohio Food Bank's distribution and delivery system to its member charities.
The West Ohio Food Bank has negotiated a purchase agreement with the current owner of the facility, which will be executed sometime in late 2009. The goal is to raise all of the money needed for the purchase, but the West Ohio Food Bank is working with local financial institutions to secure a bridge loan, if necessary, to fill the gap until all the funds are raised.
Purchasing the facility has been imperative for the West Ohio Food Bank to reaching its goal of shifting more than $120,000 in annual operating costs to meeting the current demand for more food. Without these resources, fresh and perishable food items cannot be provided to local pantries, soup kitchens and shelters for distribution to families and individuals in need.
The Financial Goals
The West Ohio Food Bank has prepared a Comprehensive Campaign to raise $1 million over the next three years. This money will come from individual and corporate donations, grants and from special fundraising activities.
